ORA | Bilingual Hauora Journal by Tehani Buchanan

ORA is a collaboration between artist and educator, Tehani Buchanan (Ngāti Rupe Makea ki Rarotonga) and graphic designer, Chloē Reweti (Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāti Tukorehe, Ngāti Porou). Conceived at a time when Tehani was experiencing mate pāpōuri (depression) and her inability to find culturally aligned mental health care and tools, ORA is a hauora journal that centres holistic, indigenous knowledge of wellbeing— specifically Mason Durie's, Te Whare Tapa Whā.

The cover design by Chloe Reweti, uses angular lines that reverberate from a central point to symbolise the act of breathing and mauri. Positioned vertically, the motif represents a pou of mental strength and stability.

Tehani Buchanan (she/her/ia) is a teacher of te reo Māori, Senior Advisor for a Government org, writer, māmā of two and curator of life. Born in Rarotonga, she is of Cook Islands Māori and Scottish descent and is the eldest daughter of Cook Islands artist, painter Timothy Manavaroa Buchanan.

Finding joy in interiors and fashion styling, creative direction, writing and conceptual experiences, Tehani’s creativity centres on life experiences as a healing practice, self-expression and indigenous reclamation.

Tehani is based in Porirua, Te Whanganui-a-Tara with her two children, Amalija & Gabrijel and is committed to raising her children in their culture and reo rangatira.
