HELP YOUR SELF Kapū

2023

Chantel Matthews

HELP YOUR SELF cups were first exhibited in the art exhibition PONO in 2021 by artist Chantel Matthews at Te Tuhi during the COVID-19 pandemic.  During this time, multiple lockdown restrictions impacted not only our well-being but also how we engaged emotionally, physically, and spiritually during difficult times.

These HELP YOUR SELF kapū re-appearing in 2023 are timely, with the state of Aotearoa and globally reminding us to remain strong and care for ourselves and each other.

A negotiation of balancing tapu and noa, there is a sense of giving and taking inherent in the gestures of Chantel Matthew’s pieces - While these objects are things, we might consider to be ordinary, they are also transformed into things that matter for our everyday survival: objects that nurture and nourish” – Te Tuhi, 2021.

About the artist

Chantel Matthews, Conceptual artist, writer and curator. Of Māori and English descent, her artworks can be described as sculptural moments inspired by the ‘everyday’ whilst exploring her own subjectivity as a woman, mother, artist and wahine Māori. With a particular interest in how women/wāhine hold space, Chantel’s art /curatorial practice conceptually explores whanaungatanga (working together/relationship through shared experiences) and manaakitanga (supporting others) through kai kōrero, wānanga and collaboration. (Ngāti Hounuku, Ngāti Tahinga, Ngāti Ikaunahi, Tainui) Pakeha
